I Love It When..

There is a very distinct feeling when walking into your house on a warm evening, when everyone else is outside. I have always loved it since I was very small. I remember the feeling when we would spend summers with our extended family in Texas. It would be dusk, everyone would be outside and I would run in for a minute. The house is still, you can smell whatever was for dinner, you might hear a TV on in the background, most of the lights off, and it feels like an arctic blast because the a/c is so low. You hear the steady hum of voices outside. Kids playing, adults talking and laughing. The house is still. There is such a feeling of serenity, and security. I just love it.

Tonight the kids were playing outside, and Brian and I were lounging on our patio. I went inside for a second, as soon as I opened the door I was taken back in time. The living room was dark, except for the TV, I smelled the fried ham and hash browns we had for dinner, the kids were screaming and laughing, and I felt the rush of cold air. I had an intense feeling of calm, and deja vu.

I went back outside, and saw the kids playing. Ellis and our 9 yr old neighbor (which is a very sweet kid) were swinging backs to me, Lainey and Brian were in the club house part of our swing, about to slide down. The sun was setting. I kind of just watched my kids living out their lives, taking in them making the memories of their childhood.

I loved this evening. How can one person, so undeserving, be so blessed?
